Year of Food and Farming
Prince Charles
Red Tractor Week 2007

The Year of Food and Farming runs through the academic year, from September 2007 to July 2008. It is an exciting campaign to help children and young people find about more about the countryside and where their food comes from through memorable, first-hand learning experiences based around three core areas: visits, growing experiences, and cooking food.

Children and young people will be given the opportunity to find out how food is grown and produced, explore why food and how we produce it really matters, make informed choices about food and healthy nutrition, discover what happens on a real-life farm, experience what the countryside can offer and learn more about environmental issues linked to food and the countryside. The campaign will gather together events, activities and resources that will support teaching, both inside and outside the classroom, in a range of curriculum areas including PHSE, Science, Design and Technology, and Geography.

It is hoped that throughout the Year, farmers, food producers and lots of other organisations will be offering a wide range of ideas and events, information and teaching materials for participating schools thus creating long and lasting partnerships between schools and food, and farming businesses.

There are many ways for farm and food businesses to get involved, from hosting visits or going into the classroom, to providing pupils with growing kits. To find out more or to offer your support, log on to the Year of Food or Farming website www.yearoffoodandfarming.org.uk
